Pitt Meadows permits the development of 13 townhouses

City Council approved a rezoning amendment to allow a 13 townhouse development just off McMyn Road.

At an April 1 meeting, council voted to rezone the property from an urban residential zoning (that allowed just four units) to a new comprehensive development zoning, which accommodates the 13 unit development at 12469 191B Street. It carried 6-1. 

“Here we have the opportunity for 13 townhouse developments, which we know is desirable,” said Mayor Nicole MacDonald.

Each townhouse is four storeys with three bedrooms, and it includes an underground parking lot. 

This isn’t the first time this lot has caught a developer’s interest. A developer previously proposed a 21-unit apartment complex on the same site, but was ultimately unsuccessful. 

“This piece of property has just been up and down, up and down, up and down for so long,” said Coun. Gwen O’Connell. 

Coun. O’Connell said she’s supportive of the development because Pitt Meadows needs more housing. But she said she’s concerned about parking because condominium residents in the area seem to prefer to park on the street, rather than in available underground parking lots.

Coun. Bob Meachen said he wished a property to the north of the development (which staff said has development interest in the immediate future) was being developed at the same time.

“It’s a great shame that we couldn’t have done it all with that other lot sitting in front on the north side of it, and just combined into one really nice plan, it does still have a feeling that we’re jamming a lot of people in a small space.”

He said he sees future issues with garbage and green bin collection days, as well as with a tight turn out of the underground car park.

Coun. Mike Hayes, who was the only councilor who did vote in favour of it, said he doesn’t like the location of the development.

“I just don’t feel the fit in that lot.”
