IHIT takes over Maple Ridge homicide investigation after shooting victim dies

A 56-year-old man who was shot inside a vehicle in Maple Ridge last month has died, prompting the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) to take over the case.

The man died on Aug. 31 after spending nearly two weeks in hospital following the Aug. 18 shooting, according to an IHIT update released Sept. 2.

Maple Ridge RCMP were called to the 11400 block of 236 Street shortly after 10 p.m. on Aug. 18 for reports of shots fired.

Officers found the 56-year-old man inside a vehicle suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he remained until his death.

Police said shortly after the shooting that the incident appeared to be targeted and that the victim was known to police.

IHIT has now taken over the investigation and is working with the Maple Ridge RCMP Serious Crime Unit, Integrated Forensic Identification Services and BC Coroners Service.

Investigators continue to believe the shooting was targeted and involved people who knew each other.

“We are grateful to the Maple Ridge RCMP Serious Crime Unit, which has been conducting a thorough and robust investigation to date,” IHIT Sgt. Freda Fong said.

“With the victim’s death, IHIT investigators are now in a good position to take over conduct of the homicide investigation.”

Fong said investigators are working with the victim’s family and friends to better understand his activities, relationships and movements before the shooting.

The victim’s name has not been released, with IHIT saying identifying him is not necessary to advance the investigation.
