Maple Ridge names first officer-in-charge of autonomous RCMP detachment

The Maple Ridge RCMP has a new leader.
On June 25, the Lower Mainland District RCMP and the City of Maple Ridge announced that Insp. Martin Guay had been promoted to superintendent, officially appointing the first officer-in-charge of the city’s newly autonomous RCMP detachment.
“Being selected as the Detachment Commander for the Maple Ridge RCMP is a proud moment for me,” Guay said. “I’ve worked in this area for three years now and know just how special this community is.”
Guay has served as the Maple Ridge RCMP’s operations officer for the past three years, overseeing frontline operations and helping lead the transition to the city’s standalone detachment. He was promoted to inspector in 2023.
A 20-year veteran of the force, Guay began his policing career in Plaster Rock, N.B., before serving with Richmond RCMP and later joining the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.
He has also worked in internal investigations, served as the Lower Mainland District advisory non-commissioned officer, commanded the Sunshine Coast RCMP detachment and acted as E Division Gold Commander during provincial wildfire and emergency responses.
Lower Mainland District Commander Assistant Commissioner Elija Rain said Guay’s familiarity with Maple Ridge and experience managing complex policing operations made him well suited for the role.
Mayor Dan Ruimy also welcomed the appointment, saying Guay had played an important role in modernizing recruitment efforts and providing steady leadership during the transition to the city’s dedicated detachment.
“He brings valuable experience and a strong understanding of the issues that matter most to Maple Ridge,” Ruimy said. “We look forward to working together to ensure the safety and well-being of our growing community.”
Guay holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Montreal and a social science diploma from Collège de Maisonneuve in Quebec.
Outside of policing, he and his wife, who is also an RCMP officer, spend much of their free time supporting their two daughters at soccer.
He has also become known around the detachment for bringing maple syrup from his uncle’s Quebec sugar shack to share during annual pancake breakfasts.
The appointment comes just months after Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows officially split into separate RCMP detachments on April 1.
