Maple Ridge launches free outdoor recreation program at Volker Park

Maple Ridge residents will have more opportunities to get active outdoors this fall through a new series of free, drop-in recreation programs at Volker Park.
The City of Maple Ridge launched its new Volker Park “Rec Box” initiative on Oct. 8, bringing sports equipment, games, crafts and other activities directly into the park for children, youth and families.
The program is designed to make recreation more accessible by eliminating registration requirements and providing activities in neighbourhood parks rather than requiring residents to travel to recreation facilities.
“This program was a collaborative effort across several of our recreation team members, and we’re excited to see it come to life,” said Cidalia Martin, director of recreation. “By bringing programming into our parks where people already gather, we’re making it easier for residents of all ages and abilities to be active and enjoy our outdoor spaces.”
The Rec Box is a secure storage container located at Volker Park that houses sports equipment, mobile play structures and programming supplies. City recreation staff will use it as a base for five free outdoor events scheduled between October and December.
Following the inaugural after-school sports session on Oct. 8, four additional activities are planned:
- Oct. 21, 2:30–4:30 p.m.: After-school sports, featuring free drop-in games and activities.
- Oct. 31, 10 a.m.–1 p.m.: Halloween Haunt & Play, featuring Halloween-themed crafts and games.
- Nov. 14, 3–5 p.m.: Family S’mores & Hot Cocoa, offering refreshments and lawn games.
- Dec. 21, 2–4 p.m.: Winter Wonderland, featuring seasonal music, games and crafts.
All activities are free, with no advance registration required.
The city selected Volker Park because of its size, recent upgrades and location serving families in northwest Maple Ridge.
The initiative was funded through the Volker Park improvements project under the City’s 2026–2030 Capital Plan and supports its broader Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan.
City recreation staff will oversee the programming, including setting up activities, securing equipment and conducting regular site inspections and maintenance.
The initiative is also expected to expand next year.
According to the city, the Rec Box will return in 2027 with additional programming potentially including Spring Break activities, fitness sessions, outdoor recreation events and nature camps.
The city says the initiative is intended to reduce barriers to recreation while encouraging residents to make greater use of neighbourhood parks and outdoor public spaces.
Scheduled activities may be adjusted or cancelled due to severe weather or park conditions.
Residents can check the city’s website and social media channels for program updates and details about the expanded 2027 schedule.
