IHIT investigating fatal altercation at Port Haney Wharf in Maple Ridge

A fatal altercation in Maple Ridge over the weekend has prompted a homicide investigation after a 28-year-old man died following a fight near Port Haney Wharf.
Maple Ridge RCMP were called to the 22300 block of River Road at approximately 6:51 p.m. on May 30 for reports of a fight in progress. Officers arriving at the scene found a man suffering from life-threatening injuries.
Despite life-saving efforts from first responders, the man died at the scene.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team assumed conduct of the investigation shortly afterward and continues to work alongside Maple Ridge RCMP’s Serious Crime Unit, Integrated Forensic Identification Services and the BC Coroners Service.
Investigators say the homicide is believed to be an isolated and targeted incident involving people known to one another.
Police also said there is currently no indication the incident is connected to gang activity.
“Thanks to the quick actions taken by Maple Ridge RCMP officers, the scene was contained quickly which allowed investigators to preserve critical evidence,” IHIT Sgt. Freda Fong said in a statement.
“A number of witness interviews are underway as investigators piece together the events leading up to the altercation. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family during this very difficult time.”
River Road runs through a largely industrial area near the Fraser River, east of downtown Maple Ridge.
Investigators remain in the early stages of determining what led to the deadly altercation.
