A 56-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot inside a vehicle outside a Maple Ridge home Tuesday night.

Maple Ridge RCMP said officers were called to the 11400 block of 236 Street at about 10 p.m. on Aug. 18 following reports of shots being fired.

Officers arrived to find the man inside a vehicle outside a residence suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he remained Wednesday.

Police said the victim is known to them and investigators believe the shooting was targeted.

“There is no further risk to the public at this time,” RCMP said in an Aug. 19 statement.

Maple Ridge RCMP’s Serious Crime Unit has taken over the investigation, while the Integrated Forensic Identification Services unit is processing the scene.

Police said the investigation remains in its early stages and officers are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and identify potential suspects.

Investigators are taking statements, looking for witnesses and canvassing the neighbourhood for surveillance footage. Police said the area around the shooting scene will remain cordoned off for some time while investigators gather evidence.

No information about a possible motive or suspects has been released.

The shooting comes less than a month after another man was seriously injured in a shooting in Maple Ridge.

On July 21, police were called to the 21600 block of Lougheed Highway, where they found a 32-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. Police said at the time that the shooting followed an altercation between people known to each other and was not believed to be connected to gang or extortion activity.

A 44-year-old man was arrested in connection with that shooting two days later.
