Maple Ridge renews downtown business improvement area through 2032
The City of Maple Ridge has renewed its Downtown Business Improvement Area (BIA) for another six years, extending support for programs and services aimed at strengthening the city’s commercial core.
Council unanimously adopted the Maple Ridge Downtown Business Improvement Area Establishment Bylaw at its July 14 meeting, following the required provincial petition process. The renewed term will run from Jan. 1, 2027, to Dec. 31, 2032.
“The Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association plays an important role in supporting local businesses and helping create a welcoming, vibrant downtown,” Mayor Dan Ruimy said in a news release.
“This renewal gives the association the stability to keep delivering programs and services that benefit businesses, property owners, and the wider community.”
The bylaw also increases the annual grant provided to the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association (DMRBIA) and expands the levy that funds it to include all commercial properties within the downtown business improvement area.
Because the city’s grant is fully funded through the levy paid by participating commercial property owners, the changes are intended to ensure the association has the financial resources to continue supporting downtown businesses over the next six years.
The DMRBIA was established in 2007 and represents more than 730 downtown businesses and property owners. The non-profit organization provides business advocacy, marketing, beautification initiatives and other programs designed to strengthen the downtown business district.
“This six-year renewal gives us the certainty to plan ahead and continue investing in programs that support our members and strengthen the downtown experience,” said Nicole Archer, executive director of the DMRBIA.
Business improvement areas are created under provincial legislation to allow commercial property owners within a defined area to collectively fund services and initiatives intended to enhance local business districts.
City officials say the renewed bylaw provides a framework for continued investment in the long-term vitality of downtown Maple Ridge while ensuring the DMRBIA can continue delivering programs and services for the area’s business community.
